Adjunctive Diagnostic Modalities For Coronary Angiography
Dr. Yüksel ÇAVUŞOĞLUa
aKardiyoloji ABD, Eskişehir Osmangazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ESKİŞEHİR Coronary angiography is currently considered as gold standard method in the assessment of the coronary artery disease. However, coronary angiography is only luminography and gives little information about arterial wall pathology. The phenomenon of atherosclerotic plaque remodelling makes angiography a poor technique with which to assess the true atherosclerotic burden. Furthermore, angiography provides almost no information about plaque vulnerability and coronary flow physiology. In addition, angiographic estimation of lesion severity by visual assessment is subjective and prone to considerable intra and interobserver variability. Angiographic assessment has also some limitations in identifying stenosis responsible for ischemia and deciding of revascularization, particularly in the presence of angiographically intermediate coronary lesions. Intravascular ultrasound, fractional flow reserve, intracoronary Doppler, angioscopy, thermography and optical coherence tomography are the adjunctive tools used for the assessment of coronary atherosclerotic plaque morphology, coronary flow physiology and plaque vulnerability. Keywords: Coronary angiography, fractional flow reserve, angioscopyTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2007, 3(42):73-79
