Dr. Hürkan KURŞAKLIOĞLUa
aKardiyoloji ABD, GATA, ANKARA The major cardiovascular problems in the management of the oncologic diseases can be classified as 3 main groupes: These are cardiovascular effects of anticancer drugs, cardiovascular effects of radiation therapy and directs effects of oncologic diseases.on cardiovascular system
A number of drugs especially anhtracylines reduce left ventricular systolic functions. Also, anticancer treatment can cause hypotension, hypertension, pericarditis, myocardial ischemia, acute myocardial infarction and arrhytmias. On the other hand, radiation therapy may primarily affect pericardium, myocardium and coronary arteries and result in late-term cardiovascular problems. Additionally, metastasis to pericardium can cause cardiac tamponade and constrictive pericarditis. Lastly, hyperviscosity and vena cava superior syndrome are important problems in the management of patients with cancer.
We tried to summarize the cardiovascular effects of anticancer drugs and radiation therapy, diagnostic and treatment modalities and direct cardiovascular effects of oncologic diseases in that manuscript. Keywords: Drug therapy; radiotherapy; cardiovascular systemTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2007, 3(33):66-72
