The heart may be involved by many infectious agents like viruses, bacterias and fungi. The pathophysiology of diseases caused by each microorganism are different. Viruses may cause disease by direct viral toxicity or as a result of tissue damage caused by the immune response, while bacterias may directly invade the tissues or may produce toxins.
