a1. Kardiyoloji Kliniği, Ankara Numune Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, ANKARA Diabetes mellitus is a systemic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels and its prevalance is increasing worldwide. Diabetes increases the risk of cardiovascular disease 2-4 fold and frequently additional risk factors such as hypertension and dyslipidemia accompany. Cardiovascular system is affected in many ways such as atherosclerotic coronary artery disease, diabetic cardiomyopathy, autonomic neuropathy or peripheral arterial disease. Prognosis of cardiovascular disease is poor in diabetic patients. The first acute myocardial infarction is fatal in more than half of the diabetic patients. Presence of diabetes necessitates more aggressive treatment goals. Prevention of these complications, which bring an important burden to the patient and population, is feasible (primary prevention) and should be adopted as the primary strategy in the management of the patients. Keywords: Diabetes mellitus; diabetes complications; cardiovascular systemTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2007, 3(33):1-7
