aKardiyoloji ABD, Mustafa Kemal Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, HATAY Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare cardiac disorder in which initial left ventricular systolic dysfunction and symptoms of heart failure occur between the late stages of pregnancy and the early postpartum period. To date, its etiology is unknown. However, molecular markers of an inflammatory process are found in most patients. Diagnosis is based upon the clinical presentation of congestive heart failure. Conventional pharmacologic therapy for congestive heart failure are routinely used and are quite effective. For those patients who remain refractory to conventional pharmacologic therapy, immunsupressive and antiviral agents, mechanical circulatory support and cardiac transplantation are viable options. For >50% of peripartum cardiomyopathy patients, left ventricular function normalizes with pharmacologic therapy. However, subsequent pregnancies almost always are associated with recurrence of left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Keywords: Pregnancy, cardiomyopathiesTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2007, 3(24):58-62
