aKardiyoloji AD, Mustafa Kemal Üniversitesi Tayfur Ata Sökmen Tıp Fakültesi, HATAY Unstable angina pectoris (UAP) represents a clinical state that fall between stable angina and acute myocardial infarction. Plaque rupture and thrombus formation are key events in the pathogenesis of UAP. The glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa is a receptor on the platelet membrane mediates platelet binding in the final common pathway of platelet aggregation. GP IIb/IIIa antagonists inhibit platelet aggregation, and so inhibiting thrombus formation. Treatment with GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors has been shown to improve clinical outcomes in patient who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The benefits of GP IIb/IIIa antagonists are less substantial in UAP patients who treated medically. These agents seem most useful in high-risk patients with unstable coronary syndromes especially in the presence of co-morbidities such as diabetes and increased troponin levels. Major bleeding and thrombocytopenia risk increases after the use of some GP IIb/IIIa receptor antagonists. The bleeding risk may be minimized by reduction and weight-adjustment of concomitant heparin dosing. Keywords: Angina, unstable; platelet glycoprotein GPIIb-IIIa complexTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2007, 3(15):78-86
