Pericardial Tamponade And Pericardiocentesis

Pericardial tamponade is a hemodynamic condition occurring as a result of intrapericardial fluid collection. It is characterized with increase in intrapericardial pressure, decrease in ventricular filling, stroke volume and cardiac output. The most common causes of tamponade are; malignancies, surgical procedures, and idiopathic tamponade. Clinical manifestations are dependent on both the severely and the duration of the fluid collection. Since, it is a life-threatening condition a prompt diagnosis should be made and emergent treatment should be performed.
