Complications Of Percutaneous Interventional Procedures
Dr. İbrahim DEMİRa
aKardiyoloji AD, Akdeniz Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANTALYA Because all cardiac catheterizations involve the insertion of foreign objects into the circulatory system, it is not surprising that a variety of complications can ensue. These complications range from minor problems (e.g., transient bradycardia) to major problems (e.g., cardiac perforation, abrupt closure of a coronary artery during procedure) that may require surgical attention or cause irreversible damage. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has evolved into an effective revascularisation strategy for coronary artery disease since its inception in 1977 by Andreas Gruntzig. Over the past decade, increased operator experience, advancements in technology, and the introduction of adjunctive pharmaceutical agents have reduced the morbidity and mortality from percutaneous intervention. The rapid technological advances in PCI therapy means that new techniques, together with their new complications, are seen ever more frequently. Therefore, there is a great need for regular review and updates for clinicians involved in the care of these patients. We will discuss the general management principles as well as complications raised by new technologies for these PCI patients in this chapter. Keywords: Complication, cardiac catheterization, coronary interventionTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2006, 2(50):15-26
