Hypertensive Crises
Dr. Aydın KARANFİLa
aKardiyoloji AD, Fatih Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Hypertensive crises are acute, life threatening conditions that are related with very high blood pressure measurements generally above 200/140 mmHg . Hypertensive crises can be divided into two groups as hypertensive emergencies and urgencies. Hypertensive emergencies are associated with progressive target organ damage and often require parenteral antihypertensive therapy immediately. In hypertensive urgencies there isn’t any target organ damage and blood pressure can be reduced gradually with orally active drugs. Some of the hypertensive emergencies are acute aortic dissection, acute left ventricular failure with very high blood pressures, hypertensive encephalopathy, eclampsia, pre-eclampsia, intracerebral or subarachnoid bleeding with severe hypertension and pheochromocytoma crisis.Hypertensive urgencies should not be treated parenterally and immediately because rapid blood pressure lowering may lead to acute cerebral and myocardial ischemia. Keywords: Hypertension, hypertensive crises, hypertensive emergencies, hypertensive urgenciesTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2006, 2(42):62-64
