Mitral Valve Prolapse
Dr. Mehmet Sıddık ÜLGEN,a Dr. Fatih KOÇa
aKardiyoloji AD, Selçuk Üniversitesi Meram Tıp Fakültesi, KONYA Mitral valve prolapsus is the cardiac valve anomaly that mostly causes the surgery of mitral valve in developed countries. It is seen in 3 – 6 percent of a community. Its frequency among women is higher than men. It is generally suspected by hearing the systolic-murmur in physical examination of patients who have atypical symptoms and it is absolutely diagnosed with echocardiography. Echocardiography helps in risk grading as well as diagnosing the illness. While the patients have a good prognosis, serious complications that such as infective endocarditis, sudden cardiac death may occur in patients who have mitral insufficiency and too much thickness in valves. It is generally enough in treatment to illuminate the patient and to prevent the infective endocarditis. Beta blocker agents and/or antiarrhythmic drugs that are dedicated to symptomatic arrhythmic may be given. Repairing the valve should be primarily thought rather than replacing it in the patients who are thought to be operated on because of serious mitral insufficiency. Keywords: Mitral valve prolapseTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2006, 2(15):14-21
