Rheumatic fever and rhumatic heart disease are still prevalent in developing countries including Turkey. Rheumatic carditis is a pancarditis affecting the endocardium, myocardium, and pericardium to various degrees. Valvulitis (endocarditis) involving mitral and aortic valves and the chordae of the mitral valve is the most characteristics component of rheumatic carditis. The predominant cause of mitral stenosis is rheumatic fever.
