aİstanbul Üniversitesi Kardiyoloji Enstitüsü, İSTANBUL The 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-Glutaryl Coenzyme-A (HMG-CoA) Reductase Inhibtors are the strongest class of the hypolipidemic drugs today. The effect of lowering coronary morbidity and mortality of statins were shown in many large primary and secondary trials. As time, as statins were used widely some other effects beyond lipid lowering effects has been seen, directly cardioprotective effects in the subgroup analyses of the trials. The pleiotropic effects of statins are to improve endothelial dysfunction, o restore endothelial function, to potansialize the bioavailibity of nitric oxide, the antioxidant effects, the stabilization of the atherosclerotic plaques and diminishing the vascular inflammation. An immunosupressive effect and the inhibition of cardiac hypertrophy are gaining much interest. It is important to understand the pleiotropic of statins for optimising the use of them for cardiovasculary patients. Keywords: Statin, pleiotropic effectTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2006, 2(7):66-72
