Treatment Goals ın Hyperlipidemia; According To The Current Guidelines
Dr. Oben DÖVEN,a Dr. Mustafa YURTDAŞa
aKardiyoloji AD, Mersin Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, MERSİN Elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is closely associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Results from numerous well-designed clinical trials indicate that interventions designed to modify lipid levels significantly reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), particularly in patients at highest risk. The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) guidelines, Third Joint Task Force of European and other Societies on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Clinical Practice: European guidelines and Turkish Society of Cardiology guidelines recommend matching the intensity of lipid-lowering therapy to the patient’s risk of CHD. However, despite the existence of evidence-based treatment guidelines and the availability of many safe and effective lipid-modifying modes of therapy, optimal CHD risk reduction rarely is achieved. To optimize the risk-reduction benefits of lipid-lowering therapy, physicians must work with their patients and the healthcare system to implement treatment guidelines and maximize patient adherence to appropriate therapy. Keywords: Coronary heart disease, hyperlipidemia, primary prevention, secondary prevention, guidelines, lifestyle modification, lipid-lowering therapyTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2006, 2(7):44-53
