Dr. Mustafa AKINa
aKardiyoloji AD, Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İZMİR Hypertensive crises encompass a spectrum of clinical situations that have in common blood pressure (BP) that is elevated, and progresive or impending target organ demage, and are classified as either urgency or emercency. Hypertensive emergencies are severe elevation in BP that are complicated by evidence of progressive target organ dysfunction and require immediate BP reduction to prevent or limit target organ damage. Hypertensive urgencies are severe elevation of BP but without evidence of progresive target organ dysfunction. Patients presenting to the emergency depeartment with severe hypertension deserve prompt triage to establish the presence of a hypertensive emergency or urgency. Patients with a hypertensive emergency require an immediate reduction in BP to avoid further target organ damage and is require immediate admission to an intensive care unit (ICU) with continuous BP monitoring and parenteral antihypertensive therapy. In hypertensive urgencies, the BP should be more gradually lowered over 24-48 hours with oral antihypertensive agents. Keywords: Hypertension, hypertensive crises, treatmentTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2005, 1(33):50-57
