Nonpharmacologic Treatment Of Primary Hypertension
Dr. Alparslan BİRDANE,a Dr. Bilgin TİMURALPa
aKardiyoloji AD, Osmangazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ESKİŞEHİR Nonpharmacologic treatment of hypertension has an important role in both hypertensive and normotensive individuals. In normotensive individuals, lifestyle modifications have the potential to prevent hypertension and more broadly to reduce blood pressure and thereby lower the risk of BP-related clinical complications. In hypertensive individuals, lifestyle modifications can serve as initial treatment before the start of drug therapy and as an adjunct to medication in persons already on drug therapy. Even an apparently small reduction in BP, if applied broadly to an entire population, could have a beneficial effect in preventing cardiovascular disease. Several controlled trials, often short-term, have documented that lifestyle changes are achievable and effective. Current guidelines recommend nonpharmacologic therapy for primary prevention and treatment of hypertension. This includes lifestyle modifications such as weight loss in those who are overweight or obese, increased physical activity, dietary sodium restriction, limited alcohol consumption, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet pattern, and other agents. Keywords: Primary hypertension, nonpharmocologic treatment, lifestyle modificationsTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2005, 1(33):34-40
