Hypertension: Definition, Classification And Epidemiology
Dr. Ergün DEMİRALPa
aKardiyoloji Servisi, GATA Haydarpaşa Eğitim Hastanesi, İSTANBUL The most cost-effective decrease of the blood pressure is the aim of hypertension treatment. Dichotomizing the patients into hypertensive and normal is not always feasible. Cardiovascular mortality is proportional to the level of blood pressure. Those with a blood pressure of 130-139/80-89 mmHg have a twice increased risk of hypertension than those with lower blood pressure. The measurement of blood pressure is essential in the diagnosis of hypertension. Those with a blood pressure of 120/80 are not within the normal range, rather should be referred as prehypertensive. In diabetic patients, blood pressure should be under 130/80 mmHg. Although hypertension has been one of the leading disease in determining the mortality and morbidity, it has not been adequately treated. Keywords: Hypertension, classification, epidemiologyTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2005, 1(33):1-5
