Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators: New Indications

Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) have proven to be invaluable in the primary and secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death. The evolution of biventricular pacing technology as well as the outcome of recent clinical ICD trials indicate that in patients with coronary artery disease, ischemic and non ischemic cardiomyopathies, heart failure and recent onset ventricular arrhytmia ICD therapy reduced total mortality. In the basis of these results, there is a need to expand ICD therapy indications that improve survival and quality of life of these new patient populations.Keywords: Primary prevention, secondary prevention, sudden deathTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2005, 1(24):42-48
