Lead Extraction
Dr. Nuran YAZICIOĞLUa
aKardiyoloji Enstitüsü ve Florence Nightingale Hastanesi, İstanbul Üniversitesi, İSTANBUL Pacemakers and Implantable Cardiac Devices (ICD) need to be removed from the body when they loose their function and/ or leads are dameged and infected. Lead extraction is the removal of the previously implanted leads from inside the hearth. Following the implantation, leads get adhered and organised with the vein and the hearth. For this reason, after a long duration following the implantation, lead extraction is quite difficult and is a highly complicated procedure. Leads are extracted by basic traction or with the usage of some novel devices and techniques. In some cases removal of the leads may be possible by operation. It has been reported that, the success rate of simple traction of the lead is very low and highly complicated. On the other hand, operations that are very successful is known to have a highly morbidity rate. Recentyl, leads have been more complex particularly for defibrillator systems and biventriculer pacing, also lead and pacemaker complication have been increasing as a consequent of widespread pacemaker and ICD implantation. Therefore, complicated rate lead extraction has gained quite importance for the clinical practice. With the novel technological improvements and devoloped new devices the extraction of the leads are becoming a safe method. In this article, lead extraction indications, recent novel techniques, result of the procedures and complications will be discussed. Keywords: Lead, extraction, pacemaker and ICDTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2005, 1(24):35-41
