The Approach To Chest Pain
Dr. Kenan İLTÜMÜRa
aKardiyoloji AD, Dicle Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, DİYARBAKIR Chest pain or discomfort is a common symptom which can be caused by many different conditions. Some causes of chest pain require prompt medical attention, such as acute coronary syndromes, pulmonary embolism or tearing of the aorta. Other causes of chest pain can be evaluated electively, such as spasm of the esophagus, gallbladder attack, or inflammation of the chest wall. Therefore, an accurate diagnosis is important in providing proper treatment to patients with chest pain. The cause of chest pain can range from an ordinary, harmless muscle pull to serious cardiac complication ultimately leading to cardiac arrest. The diagnostic procedure in patients with acute chest pain should serve two major purposes: (1) to quickly identify high risk patients quickly for the fast track and (2) to delineate patients in whom there is little or no suspicion of a life-threatening disease. In this paper, the approach to chest pain was reviewed. Keywords: Chest pain, diagnosisTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2005, 1(7):15-23
