Antiarrhythmic Drugs And Proarrhythmia

Proarrhythmia is defined as the worsening-aggravation of pre-existing arrhythmia, or the induction of a new arrhythmia from any antiarrhythmic agent. All antiarrhythmic agents have different degrees of proarrhythmic effects. Proarrhythmias can occur as serious tachyarrhythmias or bradyarrhythmias. This article reviews the definition, classification, frequency, risk factors, electrophysiological mechanisms of proarrhythmic effects of antiarrhythmic drugs, device-related proarrhythmias and the management of proarrhythmia.Keywords: Antiarrhythmic drug, proarrhythmiaTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2005, 1(15):34-40
